Α) At numerous industrial facilities of the same activity 

Environmental Risk Assessment at a network of industrial units or facilities with similar functionality (e.g. service stations) provides the opportunity to select the ones presenting the highest risk for a potential environmental incident resulting in the pollution of underground soil and groundwater.

In these cases, we suggest numerous technical improvements for the reduction and elimination of the afforementioned risk, as well as the ability to perform an environmental subsoil investigation phase II.

Here is a breakdown of the steps required:

  • Environmental parameters recording of the field during an on-site visitation.
  • Assessment of the environmental parameters based on an existing questionnaire and using certain weight factors
  • Estimation of the environmental risk for each part of the field.
  • Classification of each part of the field according to its environmental risk and hierarchical suggestion of necessary intervention actions

Β) At a specified site where environmental site assessment phase II has already been performed

Environmental risk assessment on a site, after conducting environmental site assessment phase II, includes the generation of a site model (CSM: Conceptual Site Model), evaluating each time the data of present contaminants (qualitative and quantitative), the possibility of contamination escape and outspread and the potential ecological impacts of the incident.

Thus the following sequence is defined:

Environmental risk assessment of a site includes assessment of the following:

1. Historical information of the site
2. Available infrastructure and condition of the facilities
3. Surrounding space – land use
4. Geological – Hydrogeological data of the site
5. Age of the facility and subsurface facilities
6. Activities and operational methods
7. Soil corrosivity
